Tonight I tried using the +6db Gain with the Audio Zone PRE-T1 as I thought it may improve the dynamic.........
However, I got some comment from experienced Audiophile that.......
"隻鼓變咗龍舟挂鼓"...."大聲唔係大動態"..........and I have to say it is the most legitimate and encouraging review and so I will try recording again without the +6db Gain.
And I agree that " often compromises are made along the way. " -
- #261 [BenYC], 23-07-21 00:43Hi Chi,
It's indeed true that we all have our own preference in whatever we do and often compromises are made along the way.
I guess all hobbies share the same traits. - #260 [fotheringay], 23-07-20 21:17hi Ben,
I think we all know too well that there is no such thing as odd or peculiar in everything, especially in sudio world, just like any hobbies.
What makes it so wonderful is that if the individual feels right then it must be right to his desire.
That what matters!! - #259 [BenYC], 23-07-20 20:53Hi Chi,
I chose the vintage path re passive. Very odd and probably does not make sense to many.
I use a General Radio 1450 attentuator in between two RCA 600 ohm:600 ohm transformers. Just that 600:600 is a big no no to most people these days. - #258 [fotheringay], 23-07-20 20:29
Hi Ben,
interstage transformer???
I also have this Antique Sound Lab T1 whose volume is controlled via a multi-tapped audio-grade transformer, very similar to interstage transformers found in exotic tube stages.
It was blurry to begin with but after a while it gets better and is quite good side by side with the Audio Zone PRE-T1. - #257 [BenYC], 23-07-20 20:17I have been using passive pre for years myself. Love it for being very quiet during late night low level listening. My hook up is a bit odd thou: signal goes through interstage transformer to attentuator and then to another interstage transformer.

On and off I have owned 4 different passive preamp, from the cheapo of £90 to this Audio Zone PRE-T1.
My first trial.
Using the same S&B transformer as the MFA(Classic) but just copper wires, not silver. More or less a cut-down version and 2 basic inputs.

Thanks for your comments about MFA, but at the moment i have no intention to upgrade :) - #249 [Silvernight], 16-05-24 18:27You all highly praised about the baby reference! But unluckily I have no chance to audition how it performs!
- #248 [dkyyu], 16-05-24 14:30Thanks. As previously suggested, I ended my journey to search for the holy grial after acquiring the baby reference. That sums it up: it’ll make living without it unbearable.
My 1st G Baby reference serves me well today and I am satisfied. I guess the difference between Baby V1 & V2 is not as much as Classic V2 goes up to Baby Reference. I'll schedule my upgrade plan till the next Reference generation G3 seeing its day. - #247 [rc2], 16-05-24 14:04Hi dkyyu hing,
In case you haven't seen it yet, there is an article in hifi+ on BB Ref V2(please see following weblink). It talks about the design of the V2 but says nothing about the sonic differences between V1 and V2.

Good idea. I wish to find out more about V2 Baby reference but unfortunately no dealer in HK.
Any si-hing here reading in thei forum who has a V2 available for audition? - #245 [rc2], 16-05-24 11:42dkyyu hing,
Thanks for your sharing. MFA now has a 2nd generation of their Baby Reference (what they called the "Baby Reference V2") which they have been producing since 2015. What I am wondering is how Baby Reference V2 sounds differently from the original Baby Reference. In case your Baby Reference is the original version, you may wish to consider whether to pursue the Baby Reference V2 as the "new Holy Grail". : - ) - #244 [dkyyu], 16-05-23 22:17I bought my V1 around 3-6 years ago and the V2 when first launched in 3-4 years ago. Can't remember the years exactly.
When comparing the V1 and V2 side by side, everyone can tell within 30 seconds the V2 sounds much much better with full bodied 3D imaging and larger soundstage than V1. Don't misjudge the V1, it can still sound remarkably well completing in the top league when partnering with the vintage tube amp e.g. Leak 12.1 etc.
I am now using the Baby Reference, not V1 and V2, driving a pair of Graaf OTL power amp in full balance mode. - 下一頁 (1 of 14)
